Bunt Prominent Personalities



A B.Shetty was the son of Mulki Kalappa Shetty and Attavara Unhakke. Mr.Shetty was very studious in nature and was scholarly in his attitude and talk. Interested in a variety of modern topics, he used to visit the "Bunts Hostel" and talk to the young students, on a wide range of subjects and also donated a large number of books and magazines to the hostel library.

Mr.Shetty realised the need for dissemination of news and information about world affairs among people in the District. To this end, he started a weekly in Kannada "Navayuga" edited in its early years by Sri K. K. Shetty and later by Sri K. Honnayya Shetty. The weekly did yeomen service in the field of journalism and was very popular for more than 40 years. In addition Mr. A. B. Shetty is the pioneer behind the popular printing press called the Canara Printing Press in Mangalore.

Realising the strong necessity of good financial backing for the progress of any community Mr. Shetty established the Vijaya Bank Ltd. in the year 1931 . The bank did well providing job opportunities for thousands of youth and also providing banking service to lakhs of people all over the country. It is a matter of gratification to record that Vijaya Bank is today one of the foremost nationalised banks of India. Deeply secular and progressive in outlook, Mr.Shetty took a keen interest in the activities of the Theosophical Society, the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj, the Depressed Classes Mission, etc., all of which were engaged in the uplift of neglected sections of society.

He married Smt. Kalyani Shetty. They had four children:-two sons and two daughters. Mr. Shetty was a popular figure in the political, educational & social life of Dakshina Kannada for more than 50 years. Verily Mr.Shetty was one of the pioneers who built modern Bunts Society. Sri Shetty spent his last days in Mangalore & died in the year 1960 at the age of 77.


Dr. Kodman Nagappa Alva

Dr. Kodman Nagappa Alva, the elder statesman and the most beloved leader of the Bunt's of Dakshina Kannada. He is the son of Koolur Devu Alva and Kodman Vittamma Alva. He completed his M.B.B.S. degree at the Madras Medical College in 1941.As a student of Madras Medical college,he displayed outstanding qualities as an eminent and popular student leader and was elected president of Madras Student's Union.Even as a student, he had followed Gandhian ideals and had taken active part in the freedom struggle. Dr. Alva is married to Kalyani Alva and has 3 sons and a daughter. Dr. Alva set up medical practice in Mangalore in 1942 and was a very successful and popular doctor.

In the year 1957, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly(KLA).In 1962, he became the Minister of Health and Family Planning.In 1970 he was elected the member of the Rajya Sabha. In 1979 he retired from Party politics but continued his close associations with Gandhi Peace foundation,Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi,Sarvodhaya Mandal and other social and religious organisations. He is no more.



Dr.K.K.Hegde has completed his M.B.B.S. from Madras University and started practicing in Mangalore. Took to politics,represented Karkala Costituency in Karnataka Legislative Assembly.He was minister for health .


Mr.Shanker Alva

Mr.Alva was practicing lawyer in Mangalore. He was a MLA and he was minister for Co-operation in Govt. of Karnataka. He was represented Dakshina Kannada Costituency as an Memeber of Parliament in Loksabha .


Mr.B.Vittaldas Shetty

He was MLA in Karnataka Legislative Assembly and was minister of state for Food and Civil supplies in Veerendra Patil's Cabinate .



He was member of Legislative Council and Chairman of the Legislative Council and represented Dakshina Kannada(South) Parliamentary Constituency in Loksabha .


Mr.B.Subbayya Shetty

Mr.Subbayya Shetty is an Advocate by profession represented Surathkal costituency in Karnataka Legislative Assembly and he was minister for Education in Mr.Devraj Urs cabinate .


Dr.K.Jeevaraj Alva

Dr.K.Jeevaraj.Alva, son of Dr.K Nagappa Alva and a medical graduate from St.John's Medical College, Bangalore. Although he was born and brought up in Mangalore, he represented Bangalore city in Karnataka Legislative Assembly four times and was a Minister in RamaKrishna Hegde's cabinate for two terms. He played an active role in Karnataka politics till his death in the year 2000 .


Mr.K.Amarnath Shetty

Mr. Kodman Amarnath Shetty, son of Mr. Kanthanna Shetty and Mrs.Rathnavathi Shetty. He is a recipient of "Best Social Worker" award by Bunts alias Nadavara Sangha, Dakshina Kannada. He rendered valuable service as President of Paladka Panchayath in Karkala Taluk. He was a member of Taluk Board, Karkala, Chairman of Moodbidri Town Panchayath, President of Taluk Marketing Society, Karkala, Co-operative Service Bank and District Janatha Party of Dakshina Kannada.

He entered into the Political field in 1965. In 1983, he was elected through Janatha Party as a Member of State Legislative Assembly from Moodbidri-Mulky Constituency. On August 1984 he was sworn in as a State Minister for Tourism and Religious Endowment in the Ministry of Mr. Ramakrishna Hegde. In 1985, he was re-elected through Janatha Party as a member of State Legislative Assembly from Moodbidri-Mulky Constituency. In April 1987 he was once again sworn in as Minister for Religious Endowment.In 1994,he once again elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly.


Mr.K.Jayaprakash Hegde

Mr. K.Jayaprakash Hegde an advocate by profession.Son of H.Chandrashekar Hegde. District and Session Judge. He has been representing Brahmavar constituency since 1994 and he was Minster for Port and Fisheries from 1994-1999 in Mr. H.D.Deve Gowda followed by J.H.Patel's government .


Mr.B.Ramanath Rai

Mr. B.Ramanath Rai is born on 8th March ,1952 to the couple Bellipady Perne Mr.Narayan Rai and Mrs.Girija N.Rai. He showed interest towards the politics during he was a student.He entered into the politics through NSUI(National Students Union of India).Then he himself involved in all activities of the Congress Party and taken responsibilities in various levels.Four times he was successively elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Bantwal Constituency and he was the Minister of State for Home and then Excise Minister in Mr.Veerappa Moily's Cabinate.Presently he is the Cabinate Minister For Road Transport in Mr.S.M.Krishna's Government.
