A.B.Shetty

A B.Shetty was the son of Mulki Kalappa Shetty and Attavara Unhakke. Mr.Shetty was very studious in nature and was scholarly in his attitude and talk. Interested in a variety of modern topics, he used to visit the "Bunts Hostel" and talk to the young students, on a wide range of subjects and also donated a large number of books and magazines to the hostel library.

Mr.Shetty realised the need for dissemination of news and information about world affairs among people in the District. To this end, he started a weekly in Kannada "Navayuga" edited in its early years by Sri K. K. Shetty and later by Sri K. Honnayya Shetty. The weekly did yeomen service in the field of journalism and was very popular for more than 40 years. In addition Mr. A. B. Shetty is the pioneer behind the popular printing press called the Canara Printing Press in Mangalore.

Realising the strong necessity of good financial backing for the progress of any community Mr. Shetty established the Vijaya Bank Ltd. in the year 1931 . The bank did well providing job opportunities for thousands of youth and also providing banking service to lakhs of people all over the country. It is a matter of gratification to record that Vijaya Bank is today one of the foremost nationalised banks of India. Deeply secular and progressive in outlook, Mr.Shetty took a keen interest in the activities of the Theosophical Society, the Brahmo Samaj, the Arya Samaj, the Depressed Classes Mission, etc., all of which were engaged in the uplift of neglected sections of society.

He married Smt. Kalyani Shetty. They had four children:-two sons and two daughters. Mr. Shetty was a popular figure in the political, educational & social life of Dakshina Kannada for more than 50 years. Verily Mr.Shetty was one of the pioneers who built modern Bunts Society. Sri Shetty spent his last days in Mangalore & died in the year 1960 at the age of 77.

Dr. Kodman Nagappa Alva

Dr. Kodman Nagappa Alva, the elder statesman and the most beloved leader of the Bunt's of Dakshina Kannada. He is the son of Koolur Devu Alva and Kodman Vittamma Alva. He completed his M.B.B.S. degree at the Madras Medical College in 1941.As a student of Madras Medical college,he displayed outstanding qualities as an eminent and popular student leader and was elected president of Madras Student's Union.Even as a student, he had followed Gandhian ideals and had taken active part in the freedom struggle. Dr. Alva is married to Kalyani Alva and has 3 sons and a daughter. Dr. Alva set up medical practice in Mangalore in 1942 and was a very successful and popular doctor.

In the year 1957, he was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly(KLA).In 1962, he became the Minister of Health and Family Planning.In 1970 he was elected the member of the Rajya Sabha. In 1979 he retired from Party politics but continued his close associations with Gandhi Peace foundation,Gandhi Smaraka Nidhi,Sarvodhaya Mandal and other social and religious organisations. He is no more.

Dr.K.K.Hegde

Dr.K.K.Hegde has completed his M.B.B.S. from Madras University and started practicing in Mangalore. Took to politics,represented Karkala Costituency in Karnataka Legislative Assembly.He was minister for health .

Mr.Shanker Alva

Mr.Alva was practicing lawyer in Mangalore. He was a MLA and he was minister for Co-operation in Govt. of Karnataka. He was represented Dakshina Kannada Costituency as an Memeber of Parliament in Loksabha .

Mr.B.Vittaldas Shetty

He was MLA in Karnataka Legislative Assembly and was minister of state for Food and Civil supplies in Veerendra Patil's Cabinate .

Mr.K.K.Shetty

He was member of Legislative Council and Chairman of the Legislative Council and represented Dakshina Kannada(South) Parliamentary Constituency in Loksabha .

Mr.B.Subbayya Shetty

Mr.Subbayya Shetty is an Advocate by profession represented Surathkal costituency in Karnataka Legislative Assembly and he was minister for Education in Mr.Devraj Urs cabinate .

Dr.K.Jeevaraj Alva

Dr.K.Jeevaraj.Alva, son of Dr.K Nagappa Alva and a medical graduate from St.John's Medical College, Bangalore. Although he was born and brought up in Mangalore, he represented Bangalore city in Karnataka Legislative Assembly four times and was a Minister in RamaKrishna Hegde's cabinate for two terms. He played an active role in Karnataka politics till his death in the year 2000 .

Mr.K.Amarnath Shetty

Mr. Kodman Amarnath Shetty, son of Mr. Kanthanna Shetty and Mrs.Rathnavathi Shetty. He is a recipient of "Best Social Worker" award by Bunts alias Nadavara Sangha, Dakshina Kannada. He rendered valuable service as President of Paladka Panchayath in Karkala Taluk. He was a member of Taluk Board, Karkala, Chairman of Moodbidri Town Panchayath, President of Taluk Marketing Society, Karkala, Co-operative Service Bank and District Janatha Party of Dakshina Kannada.

He entered into the Political field in 1965. In 1983, he was elected through Janatha Party as a Member of State Legislative Assembly from Moodbidri-Mulky Constituency. On August 1984 he was sworn in as a State Minister for Tourism and Religious Endowment in the Ministry of Mr. Ramakrishna Hegde. In 1985, he was re-elected through Janatha Party as a member of State Legislative Assembly from Moodbidri-Mulky Constituency. In April 1987 he was once again sworn in as Minister for Religious Endowment.In 1994,he once again elected to Karnataka Legislative Assembly.

Mr.K.Jayaprakash Hegde

Mr. K.Jayaprakash Hegde an advocate by profession.Son of H.Chandrashekar Hegde. District and Session Judge. He has been representing Brahmavar constituency since 1994 and he was Minster for Port and Fisheries from 1994-1999 in Mr. H.D.Deve Gowda followed by J.H.Patel's government .

Mr.B.Ramanath Rai

Mr. B.Ramanath Rai is born on 8th March ,1952 to the couple Bellipady Perne Mr.Narayan Rai and Mrs.Girija N.Rai. He showed interest towards the politics during he was a student.He entered into the politics through NSUI(National Students Union of India).Then he himself involved in all activities of the Congress Party and taken responsibilities in various levels.Four times he was successively elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from the Bantwal Constituency and he was the Minister of State for Home and then Excise Minister in Mr.Veerappa Moily's Cabinate.Presently he is the Cabinate Minister For Road Transport in Mr.S.M.Krishna's Government.

Banking

Late.M.Sunder Ram Shetty

History of Indian banking in general and of Dakshina Kannada District in particular, cannot be said to be complete without a specific reference made to the tremendous contribution made by Late Shri. Mulki Sunder Ram Shetty, son of Mr.Bommerabettu Muddana Shetty and Mrs.Kakwaguttu Seethamma Shedthi and married to Smt. Kusumavati Shetty.

At the dawn of his career after serving companies like Tropical, Warden, Crescent, Atlas & Triton he began a career in insurance & adopted banking as a new way of life. He was associated with VIJAYA BANK since 1946 and joined the board of directors of the bank as Chairman from 1962; he became the Hon. Chairman from 1962 to 1969 & then remained as full time Chairman till 1978. At a time when thousands of households were uprooted overnight in South Kanara District on account of land reforms,it was the soccer by way of employment oppertunities provided by Shetty that helped these families to kindle the lamp of life inside the precincts of their houses.In fact,nearly 9500 families were saved from extinction of hunger and misery.He proved to be a savior and rescued the bank from sinking. His helping hand stretched to Educational, Social and Economic areas. His concern for the rural poor was legendary. He was a man of foresight and vision. It was his consistent nature to fight against the injustice made him a crusader for socio-economic justice and equality in the society.He was died in 1981.

Mr.Y.Shivanna Hegde.

Mr.Yenagudde Shivanna Hegde,son of the late K. Nandyappa Shetty and Mrs. Meenakka Heggadathi . After completing his college education, he started his banking career in Union Bank of India in 1951 and rose to the position of an Executive in 1970. He joined the Corporation bank in august, 1976 and had a brilliant career, rising to the post of Chairman and Managing Director of the Corporation Bank in the year 1983. He retired as chairman and Managing Director in the year 1991. Mr. Y.S.Hegde was honoured by the Bunt's alias Nadavara Sangha, Dakshina Kannada as President of the 82nd Mahasabha at Puttur. He is married to Mrs.Prema Hegde and they have 2 sons and one daughter.

Mr.B.Ranganath Hegde

He was the Works Director of Hanuman Transport Company Ltd., he joined the board of Directors of Vijaya Bank Ltd., and became its chairman .

Mr.K.Shivaram Shetty

Mr.K. Shivaram Shetty was technacrat turned banker. He was joined Vijaya Bank and retired as its Chairman and Managing Director .

Mr. Sadananda Shetty

Mr.Sadananda Shetty was started his career in Vijaya Bank . In the service of Vijaya Bank for the last 30 years,of which 25 years as an Officer/Executive . Appointed as Executive Director of the Bank from 20th September 1982,by the Govt. of India and subsequently Chairman and Managing Director from 8th june 1984 .

Mr.B.B.Shetty

Mr.B.Balakrishna Shetty earned his Master in Economics from Bombay School of Economics, in 1960 . Thereafter he joined National Council of Applied Economics Research, New Delhi . In 1964, he joined the Financial Express, Bombay as financial correspondent . In 1965, he started his career in banking as chief Economist in Central Bank of India where, he served for 10 years.

In 1972, Central Bank of India deputed Mr.Shetty for training in economic research in Deusche bank in Germany and Barclays Bank in U.K . In 1980, he attended advanced training programs in banking and financial management in East West University, Honolulu , Hawaii . He attended a seminar on foreign exchange in New York City, conducted by City Bank in 1986 . In 1994 and 95 he was a member of Managing Committee of Indian Bank's Association . After 30 years of active banking experience , Mr.Shetty retired as CMD, Vijaya Bank in 1996.

Mr.Jagannath.V.Shetty

Jagannath Venkappa Shetty started his career in Central Bank as a clerk and rose to become the General Manager in Central Bank .From there , he was appointed as the Executive Director of Union Bank of India . Thereafter he was apointed as Chairman and Managing Director of Canara Bank where he was retired .Presently he is in board of Global Trust Bank as independent Director.

Mr.M.Bhasker Poonja

Mr.Bhaskar Poonja, son of Mulki Ramakrishna Poonja. He started career as directly recruited officer in Resesrve Bank of India (RBI) and later his services were lent to IDBI(Industrial Development Bank of India) where he retired as chairman of IDBI .

Shri V.Prabhakar Shetty

Mr.Vaddarse Prabhakar Shetty joined Canara Bank in 1969 and worked there for four years. Thereafter he joined Vijaya Bank in 1973. Worked in various capacities in rural , Semi Urban , Urban and Metropolitan Branches as Branch Head . He was heading major operational Divisions/Zones at Mumbai , Chandigad , Lucknow , Calcutta and Delhi and also Exceptionally Large Braches including Overseas Branch at Mumbai . He was in charge of Credit Department , International Banking Division , Recovery , Personnel , General Administration and Information Technology .

Mr.Shetty joined UCO Bank as Executive Director on 11th October 1999 and took charge of the Bank as chairman & Managing Director on 6th October. He is also a Director of National Insurance Co. , a leading Insurance Company of the country and his is a member of the Advisory Committee of Small Industries Development Bank of India (SUDBI) , Eastern Region . Mr. Shetty is also associated as member of several high level committees of the Indian Bank's Association including the negotiation committee on wage revisions for Bank employees/officers at the industry level.

Judges

Justice K.S.Hegde

Mr. Kowdoor Sadananda Hegde had his early education at Karkala and Mangalore . He pursued his collegiate education at Presidency College, Madras and obtained his B.A. degree in Economics and later a degree in Law from the Government Law College , Madras. He began his legal practice at Karkala in 1936 and later proceeded to Mangalore to be appointed as the Public Prosecutor of the South Kanara District in 1948 . He was elected as the Member of the First Council of States (now known as the Rajya Sabha) . In 1954 , he represented India at the General Assembly of United Nations . Later he was appointed as the Judge of the Mysore High Court .

He was appointed as the first Chief Justice of Delhi and Himachal Pradesh High Court in 1966 . He held Office till he was appointed as the Judge of the Supreme Court of India in 1967 . In 1973 , he resigned from this office in protest against the supersession of Senior Judges in the appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India . In 1977 , Mr.K.S.Hegde was elected to the Lok Sabha and was later elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha , which office he held till 1980 . After a distinguished career Justice K.S.Hegde retired from public life and settled at Nitte . Justice K.S.Hegde's belief that education is pivotal in acquiring skills and knowledge prompted him to found the Nitte Education Trust . Justice K.S.Hegde passed away on 25th May 1990 .

Justice K.Jagannath Shetty

Justice Kedambadi Jagannath Shetty was a practicing advocate in high court of Karnataka.He was elevated from the bar to the high court bench as the judge of high court .

Justice N.R.Kudoor

Justice Narayan Rai Kudoor started his career as district judge and later he was elevated to the position of high court judge of Karnataka .After retirement he settledown in siddakatte near Bantwal .

Mr.K.Jagannath Shetty

Mr. Justice Kalmanje Jagannath Shetty was studied law in the Osmania University in Hyderbad and graduated in 1954. He was appointed the Judge of the Karnataka High Court in 1970 and became the acting Chief Justice of the High Court of Karnataka 1985. Later in 1987, he was appointed chief Justice of the High Court of Allahabad, which is the biggest and leading High Court in India. Mr. Shetty is married to Mrs.Hemalatha and the couple has two daughters.

Mr.T.Jayaram Chowta

Mr.Tadyal Jayaram Chowta was practicing advocate in the High Court of Karnataka.He worked as govt. pleader in High Court and thereafter he was elevated to the post of High Court Judge and posted to High Court of Tamilnadu.Presently he is the Chairman of the Karnataka State Consumers Redressal forum .

Justice N.Santhosh Hegde

Mr. Hegde is graduated in law in 1965 and after completing apprenticeship training was enrolled as an advocate in January 1966 and designated as senior advocate in May 1984. He was appointed as the Advocate General for the state of Karnataka in February 1984 and held that position till august, 1988. He worked as additional solicitor General of the union of India from December, 1989 to November, 1990. He was Re-appointed as the solicitor General of India on 25-04-1998. Appointed as a Judge of Supreme Court of India on 08-01-1999 .

Justice P.Vishwanath Shetty

Mr.Justice Perody Vishwanath Shetty was practiced in the Karnataka High Court, Karnataka Administrative Tribunal and Central Administrative Tribunal and on occasions before the City Civil Court and other Courts in Bangalore City and on few occasions, before the Supreme Court of India, mostly in all types of matters. Worked as counsel for University of Agriculture Science Bangalore, Mangalore University, Mysore University, Vijaya Bank Bangalore, Indian Bank Bangalore, Corporation Bank Bangalore, Indian Oil Corporation and Bangalore Development Authority. He was designated as a senior counsel by the full court of the High Court in the year 1993. He was the chairman of Karnataka State Bar Council and also a Member of Bar Council of India. He was part of delegation of six judges and five lawyers led by the Honourable Chief Justice of India, Honourable Shri Justice A.M. Ahmadi during April 1995 to the United States. Appointed as permanent Judge of the Karnataka High Court on 18-12-1995 .

Justice B.Jagannath Hegde

Mr.Hegde is started his career as lawyer in Udupi bar.Later he joined Karnataka judicial service as muncif cum magistrate.After serving as district and session judje in various places .He was promoted as judge of Karnataka high court.Thereafter he was appointed as chairman of Karnataka State Consumers Redressal forum.He is no more .
